BIRDS
From Doug the Rooster whom I met on Lavender Hill in the Santa Cruz mountain town of Ben Lomond, to the sea-star-eating seagull on West Cliff Drive in the city of Santa Cruz, and the surf scoters hanging ten, er, eight, in Davenport, the practice of seeking beauty as I walk along has revealed a world of winged wonders. Along the cliffs, brant’s cormorants nest. During mating season, their eyes turn an unbelievably dazzling aquamarine. Northern Harriers, also known as marsh hawks, sometimes pick entire California poppy plants as nesting materials. Blue jays can precisely mimic hawks.
